Common questions

How does SafePantry know a product is safe for my kid?

Each kid profile has a list of allergens (FALCPA top 9 + gluten + anything custom). When you scan a barcode, we look up the product in Open Food Facts, parse the ingredient list and allergen tags, and compare those against your kid's profile. Three states: declared (Not safe), trace warning / shared equipment (Caution, configurable per kid to Not safe), or none of the above (Safe).

What if the product isn't in the database?

About 30-40% of US grocery isn't in Open Food Facts. When that happens, SafePantry switches to a label-capture flow: paste, photograph, or live-scan the ingredient list. The same allergen engine analyzes the text locally on your device. Optionally you can contribute the product back so the next family scanning the same barcode gets an instant verdict.

Why do trace warnings show as Caution by default — shouldn't they be Not safe?

Severity matters. A kid with mild lactose intolerance and a kid with severe peanut anaphylaxis need different verdicts on a product manufactured on shared equipment. Each kid profile lets you toggle “avoid traces” independently, per allergen — strict for the anaphylactic kid, more permissive for the kid with sensitivities.

Is SafePantry medical advice?

No. SafePantry is an informational tool that surfaces what's printed on the label. Manufacturers sometimes mislabel; ingredients change without notice. For severe allergies, calling the manufacturer is still worth doing on high-risk products, and a confirmed reaction always warrants medical attention. Talk to your pediatrician about emergency action plans.

Does it work without the internet?

Partially. The Open Food Facts lookup needs internet. The label-capture flow (paste or photograph an ingredient list) works fully offline because the analyzer runs on your device. Watch face complications and Live Activities work offline too.

How do I share a kid's profile with a babysitter?

Family tab → tap a kid → Share with caregiver. Generates a QR code or AirDrop bundle the babysitter can scan into their own SafePantry install. No account required on either end.
